GALLERY IND.では、フレデリック・アトラン によります弊ギャラリーでは10年ぶり2回目の個展、"Suddenly, the Wolf"を開催いたします。フレデリック・アトランは絵画、立体造形、写真、映像、音楽など精力的に幅広い分野で活動を行っているパリ出身・在住のフランス人アーティストです。
本展では、パリ盆地の東に位置し、肥沃な黄土に覆われた一大農業地帯を有するブリー地方で撮影された写真作品35点を展示いたします。
GALLERY IND. is pleased to present the exhibition of Frédéric Atlan, "Suddenly, the Wolf", his second show in Japan. Frédéric Atlan is a Paris-based artist, whose career as an artist encompasses deep exploration of mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, music and assemblage.
This exhibition presents his photographic works captured in the Brie region, located in the eastern part of the Paris Basin, a vast agricultural area covered in fertile loess soil and home to rich forests.
突然、狼が現れた
ブルゴーニュの広大な森とパリ郊外に挟まれた、シャンパーニュ地方の境界地域、ブリー地方。中世の村、サン・ルー・ド・ノーの周辺には、数平方キロメートルの森、粘土の採石場、泉、耕作地が広がり、自然は郊外の住宅地や穀物畑のオープンフィールドに溶け込むことをためらっている。ここはパリから80キロ離れた場所だが、12月のある雪の日、突然、灰色の狼が通り過ぎた。
フレデリック・アトランの写真は、一見平凡に見えるこれらの風景の二重性を探求している。5年間、彼はこれらの森や採石場を歩き回り、イル・ド・フランス地方の特徴的で絵のように美しい空をじっと見つめ、そこに潜んでいるような奇妙な力を追い求めてきた。時には眠りについた王国のように神秘的で繊細であり、時には原始の神のように奔放である、この場所の精霊は単なる自然ではない。むしろ、人間が自然を支配した結果生まれた不器用な怪物であり、最終的には拒絶され、見捨てられ、瓦礫の中に忘れ去られた存在である。物語の狼のように、それは人々を驚愕させ、魅了する。また、境界やカテゴリーを再考し、おそらくは分岐点を迎えるよう促す。それは、避けがたい人工化の進行を食い止め、人間とその環境との新たな共生の可能性を再び開くためである。
Suddenly, the Wolf
This is an inbetween territory, on the fringes of Champagne, between the great Burgundian forests and the outskirts of Paris: the Brie. Around the medieval village of SaintLoupdeNaud stretch a few square kilometres of woodland, clay quarries, springs and cultivated fields, where nature hesitates to take on the form of suburban housing estates or vast cereal plains. We are 80 kilometres from Paris and, one snowy day in December, a grey wolf passed through.
It is this double game of seemingly unremarkable landscapes that Frédéric Atlan’s photography sets out to explore. For five years, he has roamed these woods and quarries, watching the skies so characteristic and picturesque of the ÎledeFrance region, chasing the strange power that seems to lurk there. Sometimes mysterious and delicate like a sleeping kingdom, sometimes exuberant like a primitive deity, the spirit of the place is not simply Nature: it is more like a clumsy monster born of human control over a natural area that has finally been rejected, abandoned and forgotten among the rubble. Like the wolf in the tale, it startles and fascinates; it also invites us to rethink borders and categories, perhaps to swerve from the seemingly inevitable path of artificialisation and reopen the possibility of another alliance between humans and what surrounds them.
パリのアンダーグラウンド出身の画家であり音楽家であるフレデリック・アトランにとって、物の痕跡や残骸の持つ情緒的な力、過去の物語が遺した物質的な手がかりが、その創作意欲を刺激するものとなります。これが彼の作品の核心であり、画家として、また写真家・映像作家として、彼自身が「感性的なアーカイブ」と呼ぶものを創り出しているのです。媒体の滑らかで無言の表面を掘り起こし、知られざる世界や忘れ去られた世界のごく小さな証言を浮かび上がらせていきます。
A painter and a musician from the Parisian underground, Frédéric Atlan is impassioned by the emotional power of traces and leftover, the material clues of stories from the past. This is what his work is all about, forging what he calls “sensitive archives”, as a painter as well as a photographer and video artist: digging the smooth and silent surface of the medium, to reveal these tiny testimonies of unknown or forgotten worlds.
