 GALLERY IND.では、ダブリン在住のヴィジュアルアーティスト三名によりますグループ展 ”Of Light and Night and Half Light (光と夜と薄明かりの)” を開催いたします。

今回の展示作家は三名ともアイルランド国内外での展示経験が豊富で、2023年に小泉八雲記念館で開催されましたアイルランド・日本交流美術展「怪談 ~ ラフカディオ・ハーンとの邂逅」の企画運営者、出展作家として来日し、日本の歴史、文化への関心、造詣も深いアーティストです。展示作品は、絵画、写真と各々異なりますが、 ‘光’をキーワードに作品の背後で縦横に交差し、それを支える共通の糸を手繰れる機会になればと存じます。光についてこの展覧会タイトルは、アイルランドの詩人WBイェイツの詩集「葦間の風」(1899年)に収録されている詩から採られたもので、扱う対象やテーマは違っても、アイルランド出身のこれら三名のアーティストを結びつける作品の一面に触れています。

 詩：

エードは天の布を望む

私に刺繍を挿した天の布、

金と銀の光で織った、

夜と光と薄明りの、

ブルーとほの白、黒の布があったなら、

私はその布を貴女の足元に敷きましょう、

けれど、私は貧しく、夢だけしかありません。

私は私の夢を貴女の足元に敷きました、

そっと踏んで下さい、貴女は私の夢を踏んでいるのです。

 GALLERY IND. is pleased to present the group exhibition ‘Of Light and Night and Half Light’ by three Dublin-based visual artists.

 Each of the three artists in this exhibition has had numerous exhibitions in Ireland and abroad, and they all are the artists with a deep interest in and knowledge of Japanese culture, history etc., who visited Japan in 2023 as organisers and participants in the Ireland-Japan exchange exhibition ‘KWAIDAN - Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn’ held at Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum.

 The works exhibited by the artists in this exhibition are paintings and photographs, each working in a different field, but with ‘Light’ as the keyword, we hope to provide an opportunity to trace the common threads that criss-cross vertically and horizontally that support the works behind them.

 This title line about light comes from a poem by Irish Poet Laureate WB Yeats and refers to an aspect of the work of all the three artists that binds them together even though the subjects and themes may differ. 

 The poem: -

Aedh wishes for the cloths of Heaven

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,

Enwrought with golden and silver light,

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

I have spread my dreams under your feet;

Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

2023年奈良でGALLERY IND.のディレクターと話し合う中で、私たちは光が私たちの芸術活動を結びつける共通の糸であるということで意見が一致しました。

その糸について調べる中で、私たちはアイルランドの詩人WBイェイツの詩Aedh wishes for the cloths of Heaven (エードは天の布を望む) に出会いました。

この詩の中には、貧しい詩人の夢と願望を比喩的に反映した、織物の衣服に投げかけられる様々な天の光の描写が含まれています。

この展覧会のタイトル "Of Night and Light and Half Light（夜と光と薄明かりの)"は、イェイツのこの傑作の4行目から引用されています。

日本の作家、谷崎潤一郎が1933年に発表したエッセイ『陰影礼讃』にも、光と闇の微妙な対比についてよく似た記述があります。

谷崎はまた、さまざまな種類の影の重層的な色調と、金の刺繍、手沢、曇った水晶のような光沢の少ない素材を反射する力についても考察し、煌めきと輝きの明暗を注意深く識別しています。

アメリア・スタインによるイメージの創造においては、喪失、記憶、存在のすべてが重要な役割を果たしています。これらの感情すべてに行きわたる光の相互作用は、ある場所を劇場風に作り変える彼女の作品を生み出す上で最も重要です。

スティーブン・ローラーのペインティングは、14世紀から18世紀にかけての西洋絵画の光を時間的に研究したものです。幾重にも重ねられたイメージの中には、様々な姿や形の集合的な記憶が凝縮されており、それが光に照らされ、組み合わされることで、心を揺さぶるような情緒的なムードが生み出されています。

ドミニク・ターナーは、その精巧な作業工程において光をコントロールする間じゅう、彼のイメージが暗闇に消えていくときの感覚をとらえるのに決して近道を選択しません。彼のしばしばミステリアスなイメージの背後にある策略は、光が見せるものよりも、むしろ光が何を見せないかということから生じています。

 - Text from the exhibiting artists;

In our discussions with Gallery IND Director Takuma Yoshikura in Nara Japan in 2023 we agreed that light was the common thread which bound our collective art practices together. 

In researching that thread we came across the poem Aedh wishes for the cloths of Heaven by the Irish poet Laureate WB Yeats. 

Contained within the text is a description of varied celestial light cast upon woven garments which metaphorically reflects the dreams and aspirations of a poor poet. 

The title of this exhibition Of Night and Light and Half Light is appropriated from the fourth line in this masterpiece by Yeats. 

In the 1933 essay In Praise of Shadows by Japanese author Jun’ichiro Tanizaki there is a very similar contrasting of the subtleties of light and dark. 

Tanizaki also considers the layered tones of various kinds of shadows and their power to reflect low sheen materials like gold embroidery, patina and cloudy crystals as he carefully distinguishes 

between the values of gleam and shine. 

Loss, memory and presence all play an important role in the creation of images by Amelia Stein. The interplay of light across all these emotions is paramount in creating her theatrical reinventions of place. 

Stephen Lawlor’s paintings are a temporal investigation into the light of Western painting from the 14th to the 18th centuries. 

Within his layered images is encapsulated a collective memory of shapes and forms that are lit and combined to create a hauntingly emotional mood.

Through the control of light in the process of his craft Dominic Turner takes no shortcuts in capturing feeling as his images fade into darkness. The intrigue behind his often mysterious images, stems more from what the light ignores, rather than what it reveals.
